President's Message

Andrea Tobias, Chapter President

Andrea Tobias
Associate Vice President
HGA Architects and Engineers

Dear Northern California Chapter Members,

As we forge ahead into the fall/winter season of what has been a year of uncertainty and distress, we must recognize that our Chapter has so much for which to be proud. Because of you, our members and sponsors, our organization has remained strong over these past six months. The momentum we are accustomed to never slowed, nor did we veer from our long-held core principles which are to learn, connect, grow and lead.

The overwhelming compassion, support and empathy among our members is what makes our Chapter outstanding. The way we came together and doubled down on our commitment to this community and shared ideas of a never-before imagined way of return to office was remarkable. Then we pushed the boundaries beyond return to work, to conceptualize a completely new future of work and place, alongside technology that is yet to be fully formed.

At the beginning of my term, I reiterated the Strategic Themes set in motion for 2020-21 and despite the pandemic backdrop of this year, we accomplished the following and a lot more:

  1. Equity, Diversity & Inclusion – We formed a task force in July which is comprised of individuals representative of the diversity of our membership. We asked them to develop a foundation, mission and vision by which we will work together towards meaningful change. We now have a formal committee in place, which is chaired by Jomal McNeal, Nancy Ly, and past President, Jay Sholl. Please reach out to them if you are interested in volunteering. More information about the committee will be announced over the next couple of months.
  2. Increased Connection to Members – With virtual as the new cornerstone of how we meet, we took advantage of the flexibility to dial in from home and boosted the number of programs we offer to facilitate more opportunities to connect with each other. We created a myriad of virtual events including Pop-Ups, End User Forums, a Sponsor Appreciation Wine Tasting, a Young Leaders Group Bingo Night, a Mentorship Series, a Women of CoreNet book club and a Trivia Night.
  3. Preparing Future Leaders of the Organization – We offered more options for early-in-career folks to engage and build their network and their skills. We provided a wide variety of programs such as a Dale Carnegie Leadership Series, a Mentor/Mentee program for Young Leaders to pair up with seasoned members, and End User forum discussion around best practices and the CoreNet Apprenticeship Program which places interns with Chapter member companies.
  4. Advance Social Media and Content Creation – #CNGNorCal is gaining traction! The level of posting activity to LinkedIn and Instagram has dramatically increased to maximize engagement and provide timely Chapter information. Content has expanded beyond announcing program events, and now include sponsor recognition, and shining a light on volunteers who are making a difference in the Chapter. Additionally, we have added a robust COVID resources landing page on the website with recordings of our events, podcasts and End User Forum summaries.

We must continue to look to the future and celebrate our accomplishments both big and small. It has been a profound journey so far working alongside our incredible Board and Leadership, and I am grateful for their dedication, their passion and their commitment to delivering value to our members and sponsors.

I am encouraged, yet unsurprised that in turbulent times like these, tenacity remains our strongest attribute. The sheer resilience and positivity of our Chapter gives me hope for the year ahead and beyond.

As a final point, I urge you to join me tomorrow at the Chapter's CRE Virtual Gala, to celebrate all that we’ve done in 2020 to support and offer kindness to our colleagues, clients, employees, and friends. Even though the awards gala will feel different since we’re not together at a fancy hotel – we intend for it to still be fun and memorable. In true CoreNet NorCal style, nothing will stand in the way of us centering on the positive and having a good time!

Sincerely,
Andrea Tobias

CRE Virtual Gala: Celebrating our CRE CommUNITY!

While circumstances won’t allow for our signature gathering this year, that won't stop us from celebrating our Northern California Chapter's 22nd year as we usually do... with an evening honoring our outstanding members and the accomplishments of our chapter this past year. Of course, the celebration will be held virtually this year, but we're going to have some fun with this show and as with any CoreNet event virtual or otherwise, the networking will be top notch!

The show will celebrate award honorees from the past 22 years and feature stand-out members of the next generation. There will be live music, sketches and check-ins featuring chapter members as well as videos highlighting our community's response to the events of 2020. And never fear! The virtual networking will be going strong before the show begins.

As is the case every year, it’s an event that you will not want to miss!

Chapter News and Updates

CoreNet Apprentice Program A Huge Success

The CoreNet Apprenticeship Program (aka CAP) shepherds smart talented university students into the corporate real estate profession. Coming off the success of 11 summer 2020 interns across 7 host organizations, the CAP Committee is already focused on growing the number of companies who will host and mentor interns in 2021. CBRE, ServiceNow, JLL, & Impec Group are among the host orgs who rave about the success of our pre-vetted students. Many interns have gone on to full-time employment post-graduation. Testimonials by the host and some of the interns are shown below:

"I am so totally amazed at what our interns delivered that we extended their paid internship till the end of this year and possibly into more permanent engagement in 2021. Truthfully, these interns became mentors to me and our Leadership Team at Impec."

Khadija Tufail – Impec intern

"For someone who is new to the field of corporate real estate, I found so much guidance and support within Impec Group and CAP. Everyone was incredibly friendly and an absolute pleasure to work with."

Angela Wang – Impec intern

'As a recent graduate, I was super grateful to get the opportunity to work with Impec and CAP given the current pandemic situation. The entire team welcomed me so warmly and have given me so many opportunities to grow as a designer that I would not have gotten elsewhere. I have met amazing peers and mentors who I am still in touch with."

Robert Teed, Daaf Serne, & Wilton Qiu  ServiceNow Team, Host

"The Corporate Services team has been delighted to have supported the CAP program at ServiceNow. Our CAP intern candidate, Danielle DeWitz, has excelled in her role as a summer intern where she contributed to our future plans for Environmental Sustainability/Real Estate. Her high-quality output will be used when realizing our FY’21 and beyond programs."

Danielle DeWitz – ServiceNow Intern

"The CAP program helped me find a position that was perfectly suited to my goals and career path and develop friendships that I know will last a lifetime. Joining the CAP program has been the single most valuable choice I've made in my academic and professional career."

Shap Roder – CBRE Host

"Robert Springer interned for CBRE this summer and was able to see how CBRE partners with clients to solve problems and deliver solutions. Internships are a great opportunity for CBRE to attract the talent that we need for the future."

Robert Springer - CBRE Intern

"I was able to get an understanding of the different services offered by CBRE. The relationships I built within the originations and with client companies was an unparalleled experience for me."

Women of CoreNet Update

On July 22, Women of CoreNet held an encore Happy Hour and discussion about the June Program featuring Allison Tabor. During the Happy Hour, "Resilience, Recovery & Recreate, Putting Your Best Assets to Work" were discussed in the context of Tabor's bestselling book, Work Your Assets Off: Stop Working So Hard in Business and In Life. During this exciting session, we rotated through breakout rooms and hit on topics from both the book and program.

We give a special thanks to all the members and guests who attended - and MVP Award to Allison Tabor, who was so inspired by our members in our June engagement, she made a cameo appearance in on the Happy Hour the following month!
