  President's Message

Michael Casolo, JLL

I am proud to announce that the CoreNet NorCal chapter was named Chapter of the Year at the CoreNet Global North American Summit Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., on October 28.  Each year, CoreNet Global bestows the Chapter of the Year honor on two CoreNet chapters, one small/medium chapter and one large/mega chapter for excelling in CoreNet Global's efforts to continually champion and advance the field of corporate real estate. The CoreNet NorCal chapter won in the large/mega chapter category.

I am thrilled to let you all know that our Chapter had one of the highest participation rates of any Chapter at the Summit - nearly 200 of your local colleagues, clients, service providers. We had a great showing for our Chapter reception on Sunday and at the post-party we cohosted with the Southern California chapter at Bobby McKey’s.

Just a few short weeks later, on November 20, we look forward to celebrating our members and our Chapter locally at our own Chapter Awards Dinner. Once again, this event has already sold out (but please reach out if you need a spot on a waiting list) and promises to be an amazing evening. Our Chapter is most fortunate to have a strong field of candidates for our awards, and for 2014, Curt Wilhelm (EA) and Antonia Cardone (DTZ) rose to the top of the heap. Nancy Morse and Barbara Lambing and their committee have planned a fantastic evening for us – one that should even outshine last year’s celebration.

Before I close, I want to address two things: our Board Summer Retreat and a broad call for volunteers.

In August, your board and leadership team met for a full day retreat to shape the vision for the future of the Chapter. Out of this event came a shared focus on technology, program quality, member engagement and sponsor value proposition. We have embedded tasks associated with these goals in all of our committees and we will be measuring our progress in each category as the year progresses. Our next step: defining KPI’s.

Finally, I want to thank those of you how have recently responded to our calls for volunteers and to encourage others to join our team. We have a great Chapter and an amazing list of events and activities but it takes a village (or maybe a metropolis!) to pull it all together. Being part of a committee or even the leadership team can be highly rewarding both personally and professionally. If you’d like to get more involved, please reach out to Dick Palomba our Chapter Administrative Officer.

I look forward to seeing you at our Chapter Awards Dinner.

Michael Casolo

Northern California Recognized as CoreNet Global's Chapter of the year!

The CoreNet NorCal chapter was named Chapter of the Year at the CoreNet Global North American Summit Awards in Washington, D.C., on October 28. Chapter President Michael Casolo and Past President Bill Roberts accepted the award in person with many other NorCal board members and Chapter members on hand to celebrate.

Chapters were evaluated based upon their success in four key areas:

  • Membership -- development and execution of a successful membership recruitment and retention campaign with demonstrated membership growth in the current fiscal year.
  • Value Proposition – active engagement among local members in chapter events and offerings.
  • Programming – providing innovative, creative, and useful programming for chapter members.
  • Alignment -- with CoreNet Global’s strategic plan.

In addition to demonstrating Chapter excellence in each these areas throughout the year, the Chapter had to create a compelling submission to showcase its work. This year's submission featured an interactive website called ENGAGE, featuring rich content and video presentations displaying the Chapter’s work in each of the required areas.  Here is a link to CoreNet NorCal’s Chapter of the Year submission website:

Special thanks are in order to Communications Co-Chair Shannon Knuth, of Kilroy Realty Corporation, who led the submission effort with significant help from the Chapter’s public relations consultant, Erin Carew, of Instigate Marketing and Public Relations.  Thanks, also, to the Chapter leadership team, specifically Bill Roberts, of Hewlett-Packard, and Dick Palomba, of Corporate Planning Consultants, for their strong support and participation in this effort.  Finally, thanks to the incredibly engaged members of CoreNet NorCal, without whom none of the outstanding accomplishments of the NorCal Chapter over the past year would have been possible.  Congratulations to all!

  Day on the Bay Recap
By Erin Carew

Second Annual CoreNet Northern California “Day on the Bay” Event Was Huge Success

On October 10, more than 300 CoreNet members and guests enjoyed a fun-filled afternoon aboard the California Hornblower.  At 183 feet, the craft is one of the West Coast’s largest luxury yachts and was captained for the day by CoreNet NorCal member, Ed Shea, West Coast Director for Currie & Brown.

Ed, who serves on the chapter leadership committee as special events co-chair, is also a U.S. Merchant Marine officer. He has functioned as a relief captain on the California Hornblower since 1996. Dressed in full regalia, Ed greeted attendees as they boarded the vessel. Then, he got behind the controls and took the party out on the water for stunning tour of the San Francisco Bay.

Fog obscured and ultimately aborted the Blue Angels show, however, attendees hardly missed them. They grazed on a fabulous spread, sipped libations and networked to their hearts content against the backdrop of breathtaking views.  Special guest, U.S. Navy (retired) pilot Captain John Wood was also on hand.  A twenty-year veteran of carrier operations, John flew F-18s and A-4s and shared both his military and commercial experiences with attendees.

This year’s event was planned and executed with great finesse by the “Day on the Bay” Planning Committee.  Members include:  Samantha Martz of T3 Advisors, Aimee Hallgrimson and Barbara Lambing of XL Construction, Mike Bangs of Oracle, and Amy Garber of Visions Management as well as Luigi Sciabarrasi of DTZ.

The Chapter Leadership extends a special thanks to all table and bar sponsors and wants to specifically identify the “Day on the Bay” masters sponsors - XL Construction, Haworth and Form4 Architecture. To view more photos from the event visit the album here.
