President's Message

John Lucas, Chapter President

John Lucas
VP, Global Real Estate and Workplace Services
Juniper Networks

Dear Northern California Chapter Members,

On April 1, 2018 l inherited the time-honored tradition of leading the Northern California Chapter of CoreNet. In doing so, I would first like to say THANK YOU to all of you, our members.  You continue to make our chapter a unique and thriving community. Additionally, I would like to recognize and thank our chapter sponsors, our leadership team, and our board members who all volunteer their time and resources to pursue the realization of our mission.  I would also like to thank all of our dedicated committee co-chairs and members who tirelessly give their time and energy to support what I believe is one of the most exciting, progressive and vibrant CoreNet chapters within the global organization.

Our mission is to connect corporate real estate leaders, advance knowledge and promote professional growth. We accomplish that by delivering programs that provide our members with rich educational and networking opportunities. I am especially proud of how our chapter fulfilled our mission during the past year with our diverse offering of high quality chapter meetings and special events. We raised the bar this year with our Annual CRE Awards, Economic Forecast, Golf Tournament, Day on the Bay, Sponsor Appreciation Event and Holiday Party which were all top notch. Additionally, we increased our membership and expanded our sponsorship program thereby solidifying the fiscal health of the chapter even further. Our special interests groups (SIG’s) also flourished including our Women of CoreNet and Young Leaders Groups which hosted fantastic events! Our Communications Committee enhanced all of it by providing information and content to members through our innovative podcast series, our expanded social media program and perhaps most importantly our brand new chapter website!

As my term as President begins, I believe the time is right to help shape the CoreNet into an association that supports the development of corporate real estate careers of the future. Our engagement in CoreNet Global’ s Future Forward 2025 initiative is the perfect platform to create a new vision of the future of the global organization and our chapter. More than ever we as an industry have become more interested in diversity in terms of membership, thought, and experience. We have come to value the trusted network of peers within our chapter and to rely upon it for their professional development and tap into it when new professional challenges arise. The world of corporate real estate has evolved way beyond being just about the technicalities of real estate. More and more we need a broad set of skills that encompass the entire lifecycle of the employee experience in the work environment. Culture, connection, environmental sustainability, health and well-being, cyber security, safety, and ubiquitous technology all matter now in ways that none of us could have imagined a few short years ago.

In the years ahead, it is possible that robots and artificial intelligence will replace core elements our current roles and we will have to hone new skills to maintain our value and competitive advantage. That is where CoreNet will need to focus. We need to shift from delivering services to delivering a complete and satisfying work environment experience. Employees and colleagues expect a more customized experience. They have higher expectations of personal freedom and social value.

The profession of corporate real estate, like many professions, needs to attract the digital natives to help manage big data, cybersecurity, and much more. CoreNet NorCal can, and will, play a key role in providing information and content that will help CRE’s navigate these changing professional demands. In addition, we must also strive to attract and grow the future pipeline of new talent, by strengthening and expanding the association’s academic relationships and curriculum in conjunction with CoreNet Global, and other industry associations.

In closing, it is important to recognize that the CoreNet Global has a strong network of more than 11,000 members in 50 countries worldwide, and a unique ability to support and advance the profession on both a global and local scale. It is a pivotal time for CoreNet and I am really excited about my new role as President of the Northern California Chapter. I am energized by the opportunity to serve and by the strong line up of program content, and special events we have planned throughout the coming year. However, I am most inspired by the chance to work with you, the fantastic professionals that make up our chapter. Together, we will help shape the future of things to come. So please, join us by getting actively involved in the chapter!

- John

Featured Podcast: Diversity and Inclusion, Women of CoreNet

03.27.18 // CoreNet Northern California Chapter is especially pleased to offer our listeners this thought-provoking podcast about diversity and inclusion. Recorded at the Women of CoreNet event held at Palo Alto Networks in Santa Clara on February 28, 2018, it features two extremely dynamic speakers, Cheryl S. Durst, Executive VP & CEO of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) and Bari A. Williams, Head of Business Operations Management, North America at StubHub.  The casual conversation format of the session created the perfect environment for candor. Consequently, both speakers delved deeply into their personal experiences holding little back!

While this provided an extra rich learning experience, at times the dialogue included strong language and is, therefore, suitable for mature audiences only.
